Who should I Vote for – Party or Candidate ?

Bangalore will go to polls on April 17th –  an important question to answer – should I vote for the best candidate as the MP or should I vote for the Party irrespective of the Candidate’s competency & integrity.  Well I believe that we should vote for the  candidate and not the party. My reasoning is as follows:

  •  Bangalore has big problems facing it – water resources will get exhausted in the next few years; transport woes will only increase; Bangalore brand is losing its luster –thereby under-leveraging the promise of becoming another Silicon Valley.
  • To solve these problems – you need MPs who will bat for Bangalore – come up with solutions to these problems and then more importantly implement those solutions by working with different stakeholders – the Central Government, the State Government, BBMP, Corporates, International Agencies and the citizens of Bangalore.
  • We are a resource constrained nation and state – resources will flow only to those solutions which are well articulated & argued; seem to have a good chance of success and is being put forth by an MP who is well respected.
  • So the attributes required in an MP for a Bangalore Constituency – a) Is well respected b) Has a track record of coming up with solutions/ideas c) Is known for execution d) Has the ability to work across political divisions e) Understands the local issues well f) Is honest to a fault!!
  • I feel that such candidates are found in different parties.. there are honest, capable candidates in both BJP and Congress. Unfortunately, there are dishonest, capable candidates in both parties and more likely dishonest & incapable candidates in both parties. There are also honest & capable candidates in AAP, JD(S) and Nav Bharath.
  • It is important for us to evaluate the candidates across party lines and choose an honest and capable candidate in that constituency irrespective of the party – because the candidate will make Bangalore better and not the party.
  • And if you are wondering that the MP is also responsible for making laws which affect the whole country – my submission is that if you choose a capable & honest candidate who can fix Bangalore – he or she will also ensure that good laws are made in parliament!!

So join me in this election to vote for the best candidate and not the party!!

It is both. If you are asking with respect to vote for BJP just because of Modi ? I would say yes. Because he is the best leader we have in India who can take India to the next step. No one else is anywhere close to it. So, just to bring him in, I will vote for BJP. But BJP is also a very good party with lot of other decently good leaders. So, this group lead by Modi is great. So, vote for BJP.

Now if you are talking of Nandan Nilekani versus Congress. I would say I like Nandan Nilekani, but I will not vote for him because he has joined the most corrupt, most communal party called Congress who are full of non-leaders, full of non-patriots, full of cheaters, full of communal people, full of everything that is bad for India. If he had stood as Independent candidate, I may have considered (not sure though since I want Modi lead BJP to come into power, but I would have considered voting for him). But now I will never vote for Nandan Nilekani since he is representing Congress (aka Dongress, aka cheaters, aka non-patriots aka all bad things).

Dear AK – thanks for your comments – I would like to point out that every party has corrupt leaders except probably AAP. Even BJP has leaders like Sriramulu and Yeddy. I agree with you that people make a difference like Modi in BJP. In the same way people like Nandan can make a difference in Congress.

Wonder if ever Bangalore specific problems were solved or addressed in Parliament. It is wrong to talk about local issues in Parliament. For local issues there are appointed bodies. If they are non functional the we can’t fix it from Parliament. A strong central governance with experienced and proven leader is needed for next 5 years.
Just can’t stand “right man in wrong party”! It was dismaying to learn people expectation that an MP should help in constructing toilets!!!!

Dear Prashant – all politics are local. If indeed the MP was not supposed to do anything for his constituency – then why the constituency.. why do they even campaign.. let all national elections be like Rajya Sabha then… or move to a presidential form of government.. MPs have to transform Bangalore else our great city will slowly but surely will become a has been – e need to vote for great individuals to make that happen.

While it is good to vote for the right and honest candidate- unlike in USA – all actions and voting and support of candidates are controlled by the Party whip which follows the party leader’s dictates. Even if that candidate wants to go for or against any resolution or plan his party mandate is the one he needs to follow. Besides if that candidate does not belong to the ruling party – your vote is just a waste. If you like Modi vote for anyone in that party. Similarly – if you do not like the current Congress party – any new Congress party won’t be any better. But if you vote for AAP or any other small party – then your vote is a waste and will only split the strength. So you may need to vote for Modi. If you like another party like Congress or AAP or the hundred others – that is a different one. So do not choose the candidate. Choose the party only.

To the poster and to all who have commented.

– Every individual has their views and I welcome for a healthy discussion.

– You may agree Parties today have mix of Good and Bad people?

– Is anything wrong in selecting Good People in our parliament? Irrespective of Party he belongs? Since we do not directly select the PM of India, though we say “By The People”.?

– Should we not think of a Candidate who is clean/Good/Problem Solver, avoiding Candidates who mis-behave and puts our rad down in Parliament, who forget to connect with people once they are elected?

– Imagine for a moment, could we have been like this without openings in government jobs or PSU like ITI, BHEL, BEL, NGEF, BSNL, BEML. Where we would have been without this great opening in IT/BT? Think will all your coming generation survive without this? Touch your heart and introspect yourself.

– Also I say I am not inclined, but for sure a good watch dog (Opposition) is also required.. Otherwise we lead to hug headedness.

– But keep in mind a Good Person as part of decision maker and enabler.

– Finally given a chance I host my opinion and I would say I fully support and endorse person like Nanadan Nilekani. And you may differ.

– But to conclude we Citizens have to be matured to take a right division and not by the saying goes ” Mob has no head” – Krishna Prasad
